Boys JV Hockey
The JV Friars started their weekend on Saturday evening traveling to Mount Prospect to take on the St. Viator Lions. The Friars went down early on a Lions power play, but soon answered back with an unassisted goal from Nick Ruggio to tie the game at the end of the first period. The Friars kept the momentum going, and in the first minutes of the second period, Nick Lotito added to the Friars tally with an unassisted goal. Frustratingly, St. Viator put up two goals, setting the Friars back 2-3 at the end of the 2nd period. The Friars started the 3rd period with a power play, and after some patience, Matt Draz evened the score with a perfectly timed pass from Ryan Dine, and secondary assist from Noah Merz. With less than 5 min left, Chris Murphy put the Friars ahead 4-3 with an unassisted goal. With 1 min to go, Ryan Dine sealed the deal for the Friars, assisted by Lotito and Ruggio. Huge shout out to the Friar defense and goalie Koren Switzer, for stopping 41 of 44 shots on goal!
On Sunday January 25th the Friars hosted the second place Marmion Cadets. The Friars took control of this game from the opening shift. Nick Lotito set the tone with an unassisted goal in the first minute of play. The Cadets answered back, but Chris Murphy didn’t let that last for long, adding another unassisted goal for the Friars. Once again, Marmion fought to stay in the game, evening the score to 2-2 by the end of the first period. The second period was dominated by the Fenwick Friars! Unassisted Friar goals came from Matt Draz and Ryan Dine, and a second from Draz, assisted by Noah Merz. Going into the 3rd period up 5-2, Matt Draz netted his 3rd goal of the game and first hat trick of the season, with assists from Alex Ramos-Shun and Peter McFadden. Marmion added one goal late in the third, but the Friars came away with the 6-3 win, ending their regular season with huge momentum heading into playoffs. Congrats to the D team and Koren Switzer, who faced 27 shot on goal, for the spectacular defensive showing.
