The Fenwick girls’ hockey team kicked off the season in dominant fashion, defeating Lake Forest High School 7–1 in their home opener on September 14. This first win was especially meaningful as the program adjusted to a new school combination following York High School’s decision to form its own team.
Freshman Libby Boveri opened the scoring in the first period on a slick feed from juniors Kate Mulvihill and Molly Wunderlich. The Friars kept the momentum rolling with three more goals in the opening frame. Wunderlich netted the second, followed by sophomore Reese Mangano with the third. Senior Madi Strockis closed out the period with Fenwick’s fourth tally, with assists going to senior Natalie Pasdo and junior Klara Novak.
Lake Forest broke through in the second period when Lily Aristodemo put the Scouts on the board. But that would be their only goal, as Fenwick quickly regained control. Freshman Claire Chalberg answered with the Friars’ fifth goal, assisted by Pasdo.
Fenwick added two more in the final frame. Sophomore Lyric Bessey buried one off a setup from Chalberg and Boveri, before Boveri capped the night with a short-handed goal. Assists on the final tally went to Mulvihill and junior Greta Lyle.
Freshman goaltender Luciana Pilati earned the win in her first-ever high school start, turning in a strong performance between the pipes.
In game two of the young season, the Friars took on Loyola Academy on September 21. The game featured a lot back and forth play with both goalies standing tall in net. The lone goal of the game was scored in the first period by Boveri on a pass from Bessey. The Loyola goaltender fended off 31 Fenwick shots and the Friars won the game 1-0. Sophomore Fenwick goaltender Mickey Romero had 9 saves in the game.
The Friars are back in action on Sunday, September 28, when they host the Burlington Grizzlies at 7:30 p.m. at Franklin Park Ice Arena.

The Fenwick girls’ hockey team came out strong in their game against Naper Valley on Sunday night, despite skating with a short bench of just eight players and a goalie.
Fenwick opened the scoring late in the first period when junior Kate Mulvihill netted an unassisted goal to give the Friars a lead they would hold for the rest of the game.
Early in the second period, junior Zoe Rose extended the lead with Fenwick’s second goal. Near the end of the period, Madelyn Pasterick put Naper Valley on the board with an unassisted goal.
In the third period, freshman Libby Boveri added Fenwick’s third goal of the night off a nice feed from fellow freshman Gabby Nitti.
Sophomore goaltender Mickey Romero anchored the defense with 18 saves in the winning effort.
The Friars will look to continue their strong start when they face Maine on Wednesday, October 22, at 8 p.m. at Niles Ice Arena.
