Fenwick Girls End the Week with a Win and a Tie

The Fenwick girls’ hockey team played two games this past week, coming away with a hard-fought tie and a commanding win.

In the first game against Maine, the Friars skated with a short bench of just nine players and a goalie, while their opponent had a full lineup. Fenwick got on the board early in the first period when sophomore Lyric Bessey scored off a pass from freshman Gabby Nitti. In the second period, the Friars successfully killed a 5-on-3 penalty and extended their lead when senior Madison Strockis fed sophomore Reese Mangano, who found the back of the net.

Maine came back in the third period with two power-play goals, and the game ended in a tie. Freshman goaltender Luciani Pilati stood tall for Fenwick, making 29 saves and keeping her tired team in the contest.

In the second game, Fenwick faced a new league team, the Lincolnway Southsiders. The Friars came out strong, scoring three goals in the first period alone. The first goal came in the opening minute when freshman Libby Boveri scored on a pass from juniors Greta Lyle and Molly Wunderlich. Freshman Claire Chalberg netted the second goal, assisted by sophomore Lyric Bessey and junior Zoe Rose, while Wunderlich scored the third, with assists from Rose and junior Kate Mulvihill.

In the second period, Mulvihill notched a short-handed goal off a pass from Boveri. In the third, junior Klara Novak added the final goal on a play set up by Rose and Bessey. With three assists in the game, Rose earned the first Playmaker Award of the season. Sophomore goaltender Mikey Romero made nine saves to secure the shutout.

Next up, the Friars will face Evanston on Sunday, November 2, at 6:05 p.m. at Robert Crown Ice Arena.
