Fenwick Girls Finish Remarkable Season with State Runner-Up Finish

Following their thrilling semifinal victory over York a week earlier, the Fenwick girls hockey team took the ice at Allstate Arena on Sunday afternoon to face New Trier in the State Championship game.

New Trier struck early with two goals in the first period, and although the Friars responded with a goal of their own, the Trevians added another late in the period to take a 3–1 lead. New Trier extended the margin with two additional goals in the second period.

True to form, the Friars refused to back down. Fenwick battled hard in the third period, scoring twice and applying pressure until the final minutes, but ultimately fell just short in a 5–3 final.

Freshman Libby Boveri led the way offensively, scoring all three Fenwick goals to record a hat trick, including a late short-handed goal that energized the Friar bench and crowd. Assists were credited to sophomore Lyric Bessey and juniors Zoe Rose, Molly Wunderlich, and Greta Lyle.

In net, sophomore goaltender Mikey Romero turned in an outstanding performance, stopping 43 of the 46 shots she faced and keeping the Friars within striking distance throughout the game.

The afternoon also included a special moment for the Fenwick program as junior team captain Kate Mulvihill was honored during the first intermission as the 2026 AHAI Illinois Girls Hockey Player of the Year, recognizing her leadership and impact throughout the season.

While the final result was not what the Friars had hoped for, this team’s journey, resilience, and accomplishments made for a truly memorable season. The Fenwick girls hockey program continues to grow stronger each year, and this group has set an incredible standard for what lies ahead.
